Internships and Youth Speaks!



There are currently four internships available at Youth Speaks in various departments including Bay Area Programs, Development, and Production.  

The Youth Speaks Internship Program is designed to provide learning experiences that are related to the students’ academic programs and career goals within the field of arts education, youth development, marketing and communication, performing arts production, and fundraising/resource development at a leading non-profit organization. We believe in investing in young and motivated individuals who have a passion for social justice, education, and the arts. It is our goal that all interns are provided exciting and rewarding experiences and professional development opportunities through training and hands-on learning activities. At the same time, we are relying on interns to support staff with administrative duties to document the challenges and successes of our programs, as well as general support in the office. This program also affords one-on-one mentorship that is dedicated to your personal and professional growth.

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation Scholarship


The Jack Kent Cooke Foundation College Scholarship Program is an undergraduate scholarship program available to high-achieving high school seniors with financial need who seek to attend and graduate from the nation's best four-year colleges and universities. Selected from a nationwide pool of applicants, up to 40 students will become Jack Kent Cooke Scholars and have access to funding for up to four years for undergraduate studies.
Each award is intended to cover a significant share of the student’s educational expenses – including tuition, living expenses, books and required fees. Awards vary by individual, based on the cost of tuition as well as other grants or scholarships he or she may receive.
This highly competitive scholarship includes:
  • Up to $40,000 per year to attend a four-year accredited undergraduate school
  • Ability to pursue any area of study
  • Personal advising about selecting a college and navigating financial aid
  • Multifaceted advising about how to transition to college and maximize the college student experience

SELECTION CRITERIA

Jack Kent Cooke Foundation College Scholars are selected based on exceptional academic ability and achievement, financial need, persistence, a desire to help others, and leadership..                                                                                            

SELECTION PROCESS

A rigorous application review includes analysis of grades, standardized test scores, participation in available advanced courses, student essays, letters of recommendation, and family finances. Each year 30-40 students will be selected into the program. 

MINIMUM ELIGIBILITY REQUIREMENTS

At a minimum, applicants must:
  • Plan to graduate from a US high school in spring 2015
  • Intend to enroll in an accredited four-year college beginning in fall 2015
  • Earn a cumulative unweighted GPA of 3.5 or above
  • Receive standardized test scores in the top 15%: SAT combined critical reading and math score of 1200 or above and/or ACT composite score of 26 or above
  • Demonstrate significant unmet financial need. We will consider applicants with family income up to $95,000. However, we anticipate that a majority of scholarship recipients will be eligible to receive a Pell grant

How to Apply

Application to YoungArts is made through the completion of an on-line application and submission of an audition or portfolio. No references or academic transcripts are required. There is a $35 (non-refundable) application fee per category. Fee waivers are available. Applicants may submit in more than one discipline or category within a discipline. Please refer to the discipline and category guidelines for details.
Deadline for submission of both application and audition portfolio is October 17, 2014 at 11:59 p.m. (Eastern Standard Time). No application will be reviewed unless a complete set of materials is submitted by the deadline.
Eligibility
Young artists in grades 10-12 or ages 15-18 on December 1, 2014 may apply.   International students who are studying in the U.S. on a student visa are eligible to apply. 
Audition Portfolio Requirements
Each of our 10 disciplines (cinematic arts, dance, design, jazz, music, photography, theater, visual arts, voice, and writing) have specific requirements for the audition portfolio.    Information on audition and portfolio requirements are available here.
Adjudication of Application Materials and Audition Portfolio
YoungArts has a rigorous blind adjudication process.  No identifying information on submitted audition portfolio materials is permitted. Independent panels of discipline specific adjudicators review all completed application submissions without any knowledge of the applicant.  Each submission is reviewed in its entirety by the panel members.  Following the review process, applicants from the total pool are selected as National Winners.
Notification of Application Status
All applicants will receive email and hard copy mailed notification of their status by December of 2014.

Community Service Opportunity!

California Coastal Cleanup Day

Join people from all across the State as we come together to clean up our beaches and waterways. California Coastal Cleanup Day is on Saturday, September 20, 2014from 8:30 am to 12:00 noon.

In Alameda, please meet and register at Park Street and Shoreline Drive. It is suggested to bring your own bucket and gloves. Garbage bags and receptacles will be provided.

Come out and join the many volunteers across the nation and help clean up our shoreline and preserve its natural beauty.

Internship Opportunity with the Kaplan for Oakland Mayor Campaign

Councilmember Rebecca Kaplan and her Campaign for Oakland Mayor is currently accepting student applicants interested in gaining hands-on experience in working for a political campaign.  Typically we offer internships to undergraduates, but we are opening our application to qualified high school students this cycle.  

I am also happy to sign any volunteer paperwork for students interested in gaining some campaign experience with fewer responsibilities than we offer in our internship program. 

Councilmember Kaplan is a progressive democrat and is the frontrunner in the mayoral race.  Please let me know if you have any questions.  I have attached a flyer with more information to this email. 



Youth Leadership Academy



The Alameda County Youth Leadership Academy (YLA) is a free, award-winning program that gives high school students the opportunity to learn about and discuss County programs and services, develop leadership skills and meet students from schools throughout Alameda County.

You must be a high school junior or senior, residing in and attending a school in Alameda County to apply. Applications can be submitted online only. Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis, with consideration given to geographic location to ensure representation of all five supervisorial districts.

The application period for the 2014-2015 Youth Leadership Academy is Tuesday, September 2 through Saturday, September 20th. Late applications will not be accepted.

Day Job opportunity!: Alameda County Registrar of Voters


The Alameda County Registrar of Voters (ROV) is seeking your assistance with recruiting Student Poll Workers in preparation for the upcoming General Election on Tuesday, November 4, 2014. The Registrar of Voters look forward to collaborating efforts with Oakland Unity High School by providing voter education, early registration for 17 year old students who turn 18 on or before Election Day, and the ability to be a part of the Election process.

The County needs 6,000 Poll Workers to serve in approximately 800 polling places. Any help that you can provide would be of great value, as students are often the most helpful and enthusiastic poll workers, and those students who serve as poll workers report they learn about the importance of participating in an election despite not yet being eligible to vote.

Oakland Unity High School students would benefit immensely from the experience of being an Election Official in as much as their service: entitles them to a stipend up to $125(Bilingual Poll Workers), appends work experience to their resumes, forges a closer connection and develops networks with fellow community members, and creates a sense of fulfillment through civic duty.

The Gates Millennium Scholars (GMS) Program selects 1,000 talented students each year to receive a good-through-graduation scholarship to use at any college or university of their choice. The Oakland Public Library and Community Technology Network have partnered for Ready, Set, Connect!, a professional development program designed to help Oakland youth between 16 and 24 years old discover the professional skills necessary for technology-focused careers.
Over eight months, Ready, Set, Connect! participants will learn how to use web design, social media, and graphic design tools, in addition to receiving professional etiquette training, internship opportunities, and mentoring from technology company employees. Ready, Set, Connect participants will practice their dynamic skills while assisting the Oakland Public Library with program outreach and digital tutoring in their computer labs.

Ready, Set, Connect! applicants must:

  • Be enthusiastic and willing to learn
  • Be 16-24 years old
  • Dedicate up to 4 hours per week to train and gain work experience
  • Be available twice a week between 4pm and 8pm
  • Know how to use a computer and surf the Internet

Youth are especially encouraged to apply if they:

  • Speak Spanish, Chinese, or Russian
  • Have a passion for technology and entrepreneurship
  • Are looking for service learning credit

Alameda County Youth Leadership Academy


The Alameda County Youth Leadership Academy is now accepting applications.  The Academy is sponsored by the Alameda County Board of Supervisors and the County Administrator’s Office, and is a free, five-session Academy that has received statewide recognition for its commitment to youth and increasing public awareness of county programs.

The goal of the Academy is to increase knowledge of the role of County government and the critical safety-net services that we provide, develop leadership skills and encourages civic involvement in government.  

The application deadline is 9/20/14, but may close sooner due to space limitations


Space is limited.   We will accept approximately 35 high school juniors/seniors who liveAND attend school in Alameda County.  Applications are accepted on a first-come, first-serve basis, with some consideration given to geographic location within the County in an effort to ensure countywide representation.  Applicants will be notified of their application status no later than September 24, 2014.

The Academy begins October 4, 2014 and continues through January 31, 2015.  Sessions are held on Saturdays from 9:00 a.m. to noon in various facilities throughout Alameda County.  Information about the session location will be provided on the acceptance notice.

Good Tidings supports education by providing education grants to high school seniors in need who have dedicated themselves to extraordinary community service projects. The program currently awards $100,000 annually to 20 underserved high school seniors at $5,000 each, providing much needed support to youth who have demonstrated tremendous leadership potential despite their economic circumstances.

2014 Applicants must:

  • Be a high school senior in the graduating class of 2015
  • Have financial need
  • Have extraordinary community service accomplishments (far exceeding "minimum service hours" required by schools - not necessarily with hours but in depth of involvement)
  • Reside in one of the following counties: San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Monterey, San Benito, Merced, Stanislaus, Alameda, San Joaquin, Contra Costa, Solano, Yolo, Napa, Sonoma or Marin.
  • Attach a single-sided, two-page (maximum), double-spaced essay describing your unique community service activities, focusing on one project in your essay. Discuss any of the following subjects: what made you choose/create this project, how did you help the community, how many people were affected by your work, why is community service important to you, what have you gained or learned from this experience, and what will you do in the future?
  • Include a one-page letter of recommendation from a teacher, counselor, Charity Director or person familiar with your community service and financial need.

    Who is this scholarship for?

    The Cappex $1,000 GPA Isn’t Everything Scholarship is open to almost all students who are more than just a number (in this case their Grade Point Average).

    Who is eligible for the GPA Isn’t Everything Scholarship?

    This scholarship also does not require students to submit test scores, recommendations, or essays.  Instead, you simply need to be a student.  So whether you are a high school senior interested in English, a college sophomore who is going pre-med, or an aspiring engineer attending community college, you are eligible to apply.  To be eligible, you need to be a current or aspiring student in college, university, community college, or graduate school.

    Looking for a scholarship that IS NOT based purely on GPA? The AES Engineering Scholarship is a scholarship that will be awarded on the basis of character, as determined by the essays that are submitted. This award is available to high school seniors and all students attending a post secondary educational facility. You DO NOT need to be pursuing Engineering to apply.

    QuestBridge


    The 2014 National College Match Program connects low income high school seniors with admission to FULL four year scholarships to their partner colleges. We are talking FULL tuition-you do not have to pay anything!!!

    Most of their recipients fall under the top 5% of their class and have a household income of $60,000 and under.



    This is how it works:
    1. Students submit a Quest Bridge application online by SEPTEMBER 26. It is FREE to apply.
    2. QuestBridge selects finalists and forwards their applications to partner colleges
    3. QuestBridge matches finalists based on mutual preferences. Admission and scholarship notifications are issued at the beginning of December.
    4. Finalists who are not marched can apply free of charge to partner colleges through the QuestBridge Regular Decision Process.


    The following are some partner colleges that will consider undocumented students (i.e. students who live in the U.S. and do not have a current visa) for the full College Match scholarship: Brown, Grinnell, Pomona, Swarthmore, University of Chicago, Washington & Lee, Williams, and Yale.

    Students must demonstrate high academic excellence and a need for financial assistance and the desire to apply to one of the thirty three partner schools. Applicants must write three essays and several short answer questions, along with three recommendation letters.
