Stanford Medical Youth Science Program


The Stanford Medical Youth Science Program (SMYSP) Summer Residential Program is an annual all expense paid five-week science- and medicine-based enrichment program that takes place annually from mid-June to late July, and is held on the Stanford University campus. The Summer Residential Program bolsters student’s science skills while introducing them to a host of health-related careers. Students live in a residence house on the Stanford campus for the entirety of the program, and family members are invited to visit each Sunday morning.
 
New in 2015: The entire SMYSP application is now online! There are two parts to our online application that must be completed (a Stanford Pre-Collegiate Institutes Preliminary Application and an ApplyWeb Online Application.) A complete application will also include an unofficial transcript (uploaded by the student) and two letters of recommendation (which are uploaded by the recommender).
The 2015 Summer Residential Program will operate from June 21 - July 26, 2015. All participants must be available to attend the entire program.

Applicants must be:
  • current sophomore or junior in high school;
  • from a low-income background, and will likely be the first in their family to attend college;
  • interested in science, medicine, and health;
  • taking, or have taken, science and math classes, with at least some B's in these class;
  • living and attending high school in one of the following California counties (only): Alameda, Contra Costa, Fresno, Madera, Marin, Merced, Monterey, Napa, Sacramento, San Benito, San Francisco, San Joaquin, San Luis Obispo, San Mateo, Santa Clara, Santa Cruz, Solano, Sonoma, Stanislaus, and Yolo.
Please note: Due to Stanford's academic calendar, our On-Campus Interviews are scheduled for Saturday, May 2, 2015. This is an SAT test date. For those candidates who are selected for in-person interviews, they must attend On-Campus Interviews in order to be considered for the program. It is recommended that serious applicants do not schedule any standardized testing on this date.

Deadline for receipt of applications is February 15, 2015.

Engineering Opportunities at Santa Clara University




Are you interested in Engineering? Here's an amazing opportunity for you!

Spring Engineering Education Days (SEEDs): The 2015 SEEDs program is looking for 10th and 11th grade students with an interest in exploring engineering topics during April. Selected participants come to Santa Clara University over the course of three Saturdays (April 4, 18, 25) from 10 am to 3 pm and participate in workshops spanning the following engineering areas: Bio, Civil, Computer, Electrical, Mechanical and Web Design. Workshops are presented in a typical university format, with a mix of lecture and interactive experiences. Free Program and lunch, but you DO have to get yourself there! To apply for the program, students must complete an online application and have a teacher complete an online recommendation form by February 5, 2015.

Summer Engineering Seminar (SES): Summer Engineering Seminar (SES): The SES program is an outstanding, five-day experience in late July/early August offering specially designed workshops covering different fields of engineering. The SES program also provides students with a taste of university life, as they stay in university residence halls for the duration of the program, eat meals on campus and at neighboring dining facilities, and take part in afternoon recreational activities and evening projects. Program is FREE but you DO need to get yourself to and from the University. To apply for the program, students must complete an online application and have a teacher complete an online recommendation form by March 12, 2015.

The Stanford Horizon Scholars Program offers up to fifteen low-income, high-achieving,
local-area high school students the opportunity to attend High School Summer College
at little to no cost. 
Horizon Scholars attend Summer College as commuting students. In addition to a generous
financial aid package, Horizon Scholars have access to special programming during the
 Summer and, as alumnae of the program, quarterly events during the rest of the academic
year.

How Will Students Benefit from Being Horizon Scholars?

As High School Summer College commuting students, Horizon Scholars enjoy 

the opportunity to:

  • Take Stanford college courses for Stanford University credit, and have their work recorded on an official Stanford University transcript.
  • Select from more than over 145 courses in 30 departments.
  • Access Stanford’s world-class libraries and athletic facilities.
  • Attend Summer College events, speaker series, and workshops.
  • Access Collegiate Programs academic advisers and tutors at no cost.
  • Experience college life at one of the world’s leading educational institutions.

Financial Aid package includes:

  • Application Fee
  • Program Fees
  • Tuition for 3 to 6 units of coursework, four of which must be academic in nature
  • Commuter Program Fee
  • Books/Required Course Supplies (up to $500)
  • Public Transportation Pass for the duration of the Summer Quarter (Amount varies)
  • Health Insurance Fee (if ineligible for health insurance waiver)
  • College Preparation Programming
  • Horizon Scholars-only gatherings
  • Quarterly Meetings on-campus for Horizon Scholars Alum during the rest of the academic year

Application Process

Students who meet the Horizon Scholars eligibility requirements should complete the High School Summer College online application designated for Horizon Scholars. To apply, interested students should:

  • Begin an application from the Summer College Apply page. 
  • Select the “Stanford Horizon Scholars” application when presented with the list of program options. 
  • Follow the instructions on the application, taking special note of any instructions directed at Horizon Scholar applicants.
  • When arriving at the financial aid section of the application, students may submit a copy of a signed letter from their high school counselor or principal on school letterhead confirming that they are eligible for free or reduced lunch in lieu of a parent/guardian’s U.S. federal tax return. Otherwise, students should mail or fax signed copies of their parent/guardian’s most recent U.S. federal (1040) tax returns. 
  • In the “Optional” textbox, students should briefly describe anticipated or known changes in family income during the year since the most recent filing. Students may be requested to follow up by submitting a copy of the family’s 2014 tax returns once they have been filed.
  • Review of Horizon Scholars applications begins after the March 1 application deadline.
  • Students not selected for the Horizon Scholars Program may still be offered admission to Summer College as a commuting student, and may receive a corresponding Commuting Student financial aid package. No separate application is required.

    Children's Hospital Oakland Research Institute
